on Position Summary:
The Music Director at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church plays a key role in shaping the musical life of the congregation. This position is responsible for planning, preparing, and leading music for worship services, while nurturing and developing the musical gifts within the congregation. The Music Director will collaborate closely with the pastor and report directly to them.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Organist
- Provide musical leadership on organ and piano for Sunday morning worship.
- Play for special and seasonal services, including Christmas Eve, midweek Lenten services, Holy Week, and Thanksgiving services (as applicable).
- Provide preludes, offertories (as needed), and postludes representing a diversity of musical styles.
- Accompany and support congregational singing.
- Work with a vocal ensemble and instrumentalists (as needed)
- Direct and accompany the adult choir during rehearsals and worship services (see Choir Director responsibilities).
2. Choir Director
§ Direct and accompany the adult choir for weekly Wednesday evening rehearsals and worship services.
- Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays from 7:00–8:00 p.m., with the option to extend to 8:15 p.m. as needed.
- Prepare and present choir music in worship at least twice per month (typically on the first, second, and fourth Sundays).
- Select choral music from a broad repertoire, including sacred, classical, hymn-based, spirituals, and contemporary Christian styles.
- Plan choir schedules for Sunday and occasional services in advance and communicate clearly with choir members.
- Encourage participation and actively recruit new choir members.
Additional Responsibilities
- Support the handbell choir and its director.
- Collaborate with the pastor in planning worship services.
- Maintain the music library.
- Maintain all church instruments, including the pipe organ, three pianos, handbells, and other equipment.
- Attend weekly staff meetings and Worship & Music Committee meetings as asked
- Arrange for qualified substitute musicians as needed
Qualifications
- Ability to lead congregational hymns in singing or offering vocal solo music (Plus
- Experience as church musician for at least 2 years.
- Proficiency in playing organ or piano.
- Effective organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and the congregation.
