Opportunities

The Community Journalist vacancies are available in different locations, subject to availability of resources and partners’ contribution. You can join local community journalist team in one of the following roles:

Employed:

  • Full or part time paid position
  • Salary in line with the local market rates

Apprenticeship:

  • Free accredited qualification at diploma, degree, or postgraduate level at an institution of higher education for 12-36 months.
  • Employed for at least 30 hours a week
  • Salary in line with government’s apprenticeship rates

Freelancer:

  • Paid per contents produced
  • Payment rates in line with market rates

Volunteer:

  • This includes internships, placements, and other volunteering roles
  • Stipend and other training and content production costs may be refunded

THE OPPORTUNITY

We establish local community journalists to capture, edit, and broadcast local news and information on African and migrant communities in the UK. Working with local partners, we recruit, train, develop, and sustain a team of skilled and competent local journalists to produce text, audio, video, and other multimedia contents.

THE CANDIDATE

To qualify for this role, you need to be:

  • Passionate about digital storytelling for local communities
  • Desire to come up with new and innovative ways of telling these stories
  • Willingness to learn and develop skills on using a vast array of different skills, tools, and platforms.
  • Engage in local and social media to tell your stories, develop relationships, and to discover what it is that gets the local community talking.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Produce high-quality, accurate digital stories and live contents
  • Source and produce the best articles and get the most out of them digitally.
  • Use a range of digital tools and platforms to tell stories, including video, audio, infographics and maps and drive engagement
  • Use social media to research and share contents
  • Effective fact checking and countering misinformation and disinformation
  • Build contacts and develop relationships with locals through events, bespoke email newsletters, subscriptions, messaging, social media, and other links and connections
  • Focus on digital-first contents production, sharing and broadcasting
  • Passion to spot trends and opportunities and identify what the readers like and need

REQUIRED

As this is a learning and personal development role, you are required to:

  • Be willing to learn through classroom, online, mentoring, and other methods
  • Join forces with colleagues to share ideas, views, and best practices.
  • Gain writing, editing, videoing, podcasting, broadcasting and other skills for multimedia content production and promotion
  • Adaptable to produce a variety of multimedia content
  • Use of mobile devices for all your journalistic jobs and activities
